Think of HDCD as giving the album the potential to sound great: there are poor-sounding HDCDs out there and there are normal CDs that sound better than your average HDCD too. See, just because you're a mastering engineer with access to the HDCD encoding equipment doesn't mean you're a good mastering engineer who knows how to use your tools and has a well-recorded master to work with. If you have a foreign release that does not identify who mastered it, or you don't trust the credits, or it's a name you don't recognise, then you really can't know for certain. Or sometimes you can say "this guy never mastered an HDCD in his career, is it likely he did this one version or live album that only got released in Korea?" ![]() If you have a copy that might be pirated but reads as HDCD, and have access to a genuine/official copy, compare who mastered it and when: if they're the same people, places, and times, but the suspected copy reads as HDCD, it's probably a fake: any HDCD encoding done to, say, a master tape created from a retail CD won't provide any benefit. If you pick up an obviously pirated foreign copy of an album that's even more compressed than the real release, with typos all over the album packaging, and it reads as HDCD, it's probably safe to question whether it actually is or not. I have no idea about the barcode, so I'm no help there unfortunately.īasically, the answer to the HDCD light is that you kinda have to use your judgment. ![]()
